Create an outline of what the finished project should be and fill in the details of the outline. While there is no standard for ebooks in terms of length or format, neglecting to give the product a professional presentation could negatively impact the marketing of the ebook. Professionalism should be taken into consideration when projecting sales. An ebook can be as short as a few pages, such as what would be found in a specific industry report, or as long as any novel or nonfiction book.
Write or compile the content for the ebook. The content may be original work of the person planning to publish it, or can be a work for hire or even a compilation of works from a variety of authors.
Create or obtain the art to be associated with the project. Even though ebooks don't have to have a traditional cover, having cover art that looks traditional lends to the professional quality of the project and will help the ebook be taken seriously.
Format the content with word processing or design software. Make certain that the text is uniform from page to page, except where intentionally divergent from the remainder of the text. Position any photos on the desired page and make all of the pages uniformly the desired size.
Design each page of the downloadable HTML ebook using an HTML editor or ebook software that will provide you with a template for the creation of each page. Once the pages are all designed, select an HTML compiler to create the ebook. This method requires some basic knowledge of HTML.
Save or convert your document into a PDF file. The portable document format is a standard and widely used format for electronic books. If your word processing program allows you to save files as PDF, use that function to create your ebook. If not, there are programs available online that will convert a variety of file types to PDF. If you have the full version of Adobe Acrobat, the program that originated the PDF format, you can use it to create PDFs from documents created in Microsoft Word and other word processing programs. Once you have turned your ebook into a PDF file, it is ready for distribution.
