How to Publish a Book for Less Than $200

Once you've finally completed the final edits to your masterpiece, it's time to start thinking about getting those thoughts out to the public. While traveling the traditional approach will force you to share revenue and rights with the publishing house, self-publishing will grant you sole rights over your work. Learning how to publish your book for under $200 can give you the satisfaction of becoming a published author without having to share your ideas with a third party.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the self-publishing website, blurb.com. Click on the orange button in the bottom left-hand corner labeled "Get Started."

    • 2

Register with Blurb to start an account and to begin the process of self-publishing. Fill in your email address, choose a username and define a password for your account. Click "Sign In" once you've plugged in all the necessary information.

Download Blurb's Booksmart Software to your computer, then open it once the download has completed. Choose a predetermined template in the program, then upload your images and text in the prescribed boxes. Templates include a picture book, which allows you to upload full-page photographs with small text boxes providing descriptions, or a text layout, which focuses around black and white text, typical of a novel. All options use a simple upload method that lets you browse your computer for each page, and those files that require multiple pages will automatically fill the number of pages necessary. Save the finished book file, then upload to Blurb's website.

Select the book size you want, then select the number of pages you need. Choose the maximum number of copies you can afford with $200. For example, you can publish a trade-sized (measured at 6" x 9") book with 200 pages and a soft cover for $7.95 each, meaning you can have 25 copies delivered to your door for $200. Choose other shapes, sizes and cover styles for varying prices, which are all listed on the website prior to purchasing.

Consider the cost of shipping your books as well; while shipping ground usually costs less than $20, purchasing heavier books (i.e. many pages or hardcover copies) could increase the cost. Choose an option that fits into your budget by using the shipping calculator to estimate the expected cost of your purchase.
