How to Publish and Copyright a Book for Free

Many dream about having their book picked up by a publisher and make its way straight to the bestseller's list. Unfortunately, the reality for most writers is that even if they're able to finish writing their book, getting it published is too confusing and too expensive. If you know where to start, however, there is plenty of help out there and even some free options to choose from.

Instructions

  1. Copyright

    • 1

Create a digital version of your book. If you typed it out on a typewriter, you will need to rewrite it on the computer or scan in each page to your computer. If you wrote it on the computer, just save it as a PDF.

    • 2

Use an online copyright service. Select the site you want to use and create an account, then upload your work. They will send you a confirmation of your copyright.

    • 3

Save your confirmation on your computer. Also, as an extra precaution, print out a hard copy and store it in a safe place.

    Traditional Publishing

    • 4

Prepare your presentation package. This includes a synopsis of your book, the first several pages of your book, and a query letter. All publishers have different requirements, so make sure you know what they want before sending anything.

    • 5

Seek out publishers that accept digital submissions to avoid paying postage and to avoid the wait. Usually the publisher will list what kind of work they are looking for, so if your book doesn't fit into their category, don't waste your time or theirs.

    • 6

Send your query letter to the publisher you have selected. Make sure your letter addresses the publisher's requirements and points out the reasons why your book will interest them.

    Self-Publishing

    • 7

Decide on a self-publishing site. Look for what they offer for free and determine if you need to pay anything to get started. Most online publishers will offer a basic package for free.

    • 8

Upload your work to the site. Use all the free resources they offer. Make sure that all the links are working and that your book is ready for purchase.

    • 9

Promote yourself. Use social networking sites like Facebook, Myspace, Twitter and others to try to gain interest in your book. Be sure to make your link available so your followers know where they can buy it. Build a website through a free hosting service so you can have a professional look.
