Find a topic that readers are consistently interested in or one that you have enough knowledge about to attract readers. Topics such writing, home business opportunities and recipes are always popular. Focus the subject of your newsletter to give it something readers can identify with and expect with each publication. Try to put an original spin on old subjects to keep it more interesting. The key is to give readers something they can only find in your newsletter.
Select a desktop publishing program to put your newsletter together. Scribus and Serif PagePlus are free desktop publishing programs. Scribus is available for Mac or PC. If you use Microsoft Word, OpenOffice or WordPerfect, those are also suitable for newsletter production.
Design the layout of your newsletter in your desktop publishing software. Start with one of the templates that come with the program, add your own text and logo, and save the edited file as a new template customized for your newsletter. This will save you time as you produce your newsletter week after week or month after month, depending upon the schedule you choose. You can save your first newsletter as a template by going to the "File" menu, choosing "Save As" and selecting the "Template" option.
Sign up with a web-hosting service and purchase a domain name, such as www.YourNewsletterName.com. Often a domain name comes with the web-hosting service. Use the built-in web-design tools to make a website for your newsletter where potential customers can subscribe. Keep it simple, with a description of the newsletter and maybe a sample copy. The website is meant to be used as a way to attract subscribers.
Price your newsletter wisely. It takes time to put a newsletter together, but the production cost is relatively low compared with other publishing ventures. Chances are you won't have a large subscriber base at first, so you can print copies at home, as you need them. Later, if your subscriber base increases, you can raise the price of your newsletter to help cover the cost of a professional printer.
