How to Publish a Book Checklist

Depending on your goals, publishing a book can be fairly simple or quite complex. There are only two choices when it comes to publishing a book: do-it-yourself or get a publishing house to do it. Publishing a book yourself is an easy process once you know how and you can have a book to sell online or in person in no time.

Instructions

  1. Self-Publish a Book

    • 1

Decide if you want to publish in electronic format or in print. Electronic publication services such as LuLu.com make book publishing very easy. They also sell books on their website so they even handle all monetary transactions for booksellers.

    • 2

Upload your book to LuLu.com or similar online service if you want to begin by publishing electronically. There are many advantages to this: you have no inventory, very few start-up costs, and a retailer available to sell your book. Selling your book as a downloadable file cuts costs and lets you test your book's appeal inexpensively.

    • 3

Publish hard copies of your books through the LuLu option or choose an independent printing press to handle this. There are many self-publishing printing presses.

    • 4

Choose a printer based on cost per book, delivery time, and customer service. Does someone answer the phone when you call? If not, do they return your calls promptly? This is your book and you want to work with a printing company that will be there when you need them. You may also want to consider a company that will print books on demand. This allows you to order fewer books at a time and keep costs down.

    • 5

Get the word out that your book is published and enjoy the feedback you get from the first members of your fan club.
