How to Create a Kids' Book Online

Writing a children's book can be fun and adventurous. However, creating a kids' book for online purposes is different than a printed version. An online version requires different elements and a higher level of interaction. Pictures and images are often the most important elements of a children's book because they serve as the main stimulators. Not only does the online version need these elements, but interaction should be considered as important as the text itself.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a web page that will become the front page of the book. This page should include the title, an image that captures what the book is about in terms of plot or theme and the author's name. The front page of the book should be engaging and interesting because it often is the deciding factor in whether or not the book will be read.

    • 2

Create the amount of web pages required for the whole story. If the story is 10 picture frames long, create 10 pages. If the story is rather large and contains 20 picture frames, create 20 pages.

    • 3

Add backgrounds to the picture pages just created. To keep the story visually appealing and to keep the interest of the child, aim for different colors. For example, if the first page is blue, make the second one yellow and the third one green. This results in an unpredictable page every time the pages change and creates an element of surprise.

    • 4

Add pictures to the web pages in the chronological order of the story. The pictures are meant to give a visual to the story, and children are often more engaged with images than the text, especially if the child is unable to read.

    • 5

Create a corresponding text to each of the images by following the story outline. The text should be rather small and only be one or two sentences long. The text should tell the basic story and develop the characters for the reader. The text should not focus on the visual aspects of the characters because the images given already tell half the story. Write focused, accurately and tightly for the best results, and make sure the text motivates the children to continue the story.

    • 6

Add sounds and interactive media where the author sees fit. Technological interaction and sounds are what makes online books unique. You could add different sounds for different characters, allowing children to see and hear the characters being spoken about in the text.

    • 7

Add a "the end" page that signals the end of the story. A credit page with the author's name along with anyone who has helped in the creation of the online book should be listed as references. Add the list of contributors here.

    • 8

Develop links between all of the pages in chronological order with visible "next" and "back" buttons for easy navigation. The links should allow for the reader to enter the first page of the story from the front page and so forth.
