How to Create & Print a Book

Self-publishing is no longer the domain of desperate authors trying to sell mediocre work. Advances in word-processing programs, consumer printers and online distribution have turned self-publishing into a viable and pragmatic way for authors and small businesses to release printed media. The typical home computer houses the power and software necessary for printing a book. With some careful planning and preparation, anyone can print and put together a professional-looking book worthy of space on a store bookshelf. Baby steps are required, so the best method for learning how to print a book is by starting with a booklet.

Instructions

  1. Note Card Mock-Up

    • 1

Orientate a note card with the longest sides at the top and bottom and then draw a vertical line down the middle of the card. Write "Front cover" in the right-hand space and "Back cover" in the left-hand space. This note card will serve as the cover of the mock-up.

    • 2

Flip the cover over and then pile the remaining 4 note cards into a neat stack on top. Fold the stack like a book so that "Front cover" appears on one side and "Back cover" on the reverse. Bind the note cards together with a staple in the middle of the spine so that the prongs are inside the book.

    • 3

Number the pages of the note card book. The odd page numbers should appear in the bottom right of right-hand pages and the even page numbers should appear in the bottom left of the left-hand pages. The book should have 16 pages in between the covers with the prongs of the staple splitting pages 8 and 9.

    • 4

Note which page numbers appear on each card in the stack. The bottom card has the front and back covers on one side and blank pages on the other. The next card has pages 1 and 16 on one side, pages 2 and 15 on the other. The second page note card has pages 3 and 14 on one side, pages 4 and 13 on the reverse. The third card contains pages 5, 12, 6 and 11. The fourth card has pages 7, 10, 8 and 9. Remove the staple if necessary to better view the cards and which pages are represented on each.

    Preparing Pages for Print

    • 5

Open the work to be printed in OpenOffice. Click "Format" and then click "Page" to open the "Page Style" window. Set the entries for the "Right," "Top" and "Bottom" margins to 0.50 inches. Set the "Left" margin to 6.0 inches to create a right-hand page. Set the page orientation to "Landscape."

    • 6

Click the "Header" tab, select "Header on" and then uncheck "Same content left/right." Click the "Footer" tab, select "Footer on" and then uncheck "Same content left/right." The header and footer are specified lines in the top and bottom margins of the page where the title of the book, the author's name and the page number usually reside. Click "OK" to set the page format.

    • 7

Click the footer of the page, click "Insert" in the top menu, hover the cursor over "Fields" and then click "Page number" to have the page number appear within the footer of every page. Click the header of page and then enter the text to appear at the top of every page.

    • 8

Set the headers and footers of odd-numbered pages to "Align Right." The alignment switches appear to the right of the "U" in the top toolbar. From left to right the alignment switches are "Align Left," "Centered," "Align Right" and "Justified." Changing the header and footer alignment of one odd-numbered page will change the rest.

    Printing the Pages

    • 9

Mark a sheet of paper with numbers in the corners on one side and letters in the corners of the opposite side. Label one side "Top" and the other "Bottom." Load the sheet into the printer and then print one page of text. Use this page as a guide for printing during the remaining steps.

    • 10

Click "File" and then click "Print." Select "Pages" under "Print range" and then enter "1" minus the quotes into the text field. Press and hold the "CNTRL" key and then press "P" to access the "Print" menu again. Print pages 3, 5 and 7 using "Print range."

    • 11

Load the printed sheets back into the printer so that the next four pages will print on the opposite side of the sheets. Not all printers eject pages the same way, so experiment with the printer before proceeding to the next step.

    • 12

Print pages 15, 13, 11 and 9 one at a time so that page 15 appears on the opposite side of page 1, page 13 opposite of page 3, page 11 opposite of page 5 and page 9 opposite of page 7.

    • 13

Click "Format" and then "Page" to open the "Page Style" window again. Set the right margin to 6.00 inches, the left margin to 0.50 inches, and then click "OK" to set up the left-hand pages.

    • 14

Print pages 2, 4, 6 and 8 so that page 2 appears on the same side as page 15, page 4 appears on the same side as page 13, page 6 appears on the same side as page 11, and page 8 appears on the same side as page 9.

    • 15

Print pages 16, 14, 12 and 10 so that page 16 is with page 1, page 14 is with page 3, page 12 is with page 5 and page 10 is with page 7.

    • 16

Print a cover for the book or just write on the remaining blank page. The front cover should be on the right-hand side of the page and the back cover on the left-hand side. Place the cover facedown, then pile the pages in the following order with the pages facing up: 2 and 15, 4 and 13, 6 and 11, and then 8 and 9. Bind the papers with a staple and the sample booklet is complete.
