How to Print a Folded Booklet

Booklets can be a simple way for organizations and individuals to share information. Poets can use them for "chapbooks" or small collections of their work. Churches and non-profits can publish booklets to hand out to visitors and members of the community. Many desktop publishing programs can be used to self-publish booklets for a variety of purposes.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare your pages in the desktop publishing program by going to the page setup option. Select the "landscape" orientation for a page layout, then go to the format option and choose the 2-column option.

    • 2

Type your text, then insert any graphics. Be sure your pages are ordered exactly the way you wish them to print out. Don't worry about how the pages will print, you will figure that out later on when you make a dummy book.

    • 3

Count your pages and divide that number by four. This is how many sheets of paper your book will contain.

    • 4

Using normal paper, print out your pages on one side. Fold these pages in half (as they would be in the booklet) and cut them on the crease. You will be using these pages to help you determine their proper placement in your finished booklet.

    • 5

Create a "dummy" book by taking blank sheets of paper (the number you need to create the book) and folding them in half, stacked on top of each other. Paper clip the pages you printed out to each page of the dummy book, in the order which they are to appear.

    • 6

Look at each sheet from your dummy book carefully. You will need to create each page exactly the way it looks in your book. For example, if you are printing a sixteen page booklet (not including the cover), page 16 would be on the left side of the first sheet, with page 1 on the right. On the other side of that sheet, page 2 would be on the left side, with page 15 on the right. Cut and paste each page on your desktop publishing program until they are in the correct order.

    • 7

Print out each page, front and back, and stack them on top of each other in the order they are to appear. Check to make sure your book is exactly the way you want it.

    • 8

Select the number of copies you wish to print. If you choose to use card stock or another type of paper for the cover, print that out separately, then print out the inner pages.

    • 9

Use a saddle stapler to staple the sheets of paper together along the center of the booklet.
