How to Print Mass Booklets

Printing a Mass booklet requires focus and planning. Pages are not printed in order, and you must consider what appears on both sides of the sheet. There are few word-processing programs and printers that help in printing books of any length, so the process is difficult for home users. Fortunately, planning and concentration can overcome hardware limitations and allow any personal computer and printer set to become a booklet printing suite. These instructions describe how to create a Mass booklet with four pages.

Things You'll Need

  • Mass booklet content
  • Word processing software capable of creating columns
  • Stacks of standard letter-sized paper
  • Stapler

Instructions

    • 1

Open the document containing the text for the Mass booklet in a word-processing program, then open a second, blank document. If the word-processing program does not allow multiple documents at once, open the Mass booklet document in a different text editor.

    • 2

Set the page layout of the blank document to a landscape orientation. then set the margins to half an inch.

    • 3

Format the blank document page to hold two columns set one inch apart. Most word processors have a separate setting for columns in their page format options. The blank document should have a half-inch border and an one-inch space between two columns.

    • 4

Design the front cover, copying and pasting text from the Mass booklet document if necessary, in the right-hand column and the back cover in the left-hand column. Save the document as “Cover” and then print the page. Fold the page in half so that it resembles the cover of a book.

    • 5

Create a new document in landscape orientation with a half-inch border and two columns separated by an one-inch space. The new page should resemble the layout used to create the covers.

    • 6

Copy and paste text from the Mass booklet document into the new document so that the content for Page 4 appears in the left-hand column and Page 1 appears in the right-hand column. Print the page and then set the page aside.

    • 7

Create a new page within the document containing pages 4 and 1 of the mass booklet. Copy and paste the Mass booklet content so that page 2 appears in the left column and page 3 in the right column.

    • 8

Place the sheet with Pages 4 and 1 into the printer tray so that whatever prints next will appear on the blank side of the sheet. Print the document containing Pages 2 and 3. The printed sheet should have pages, from left to right, 4 and 1 on one side and pages 2 and 3 on the other. Fold the page in half so that the fold appears between the columns and the pages read like a book.

    • 9

Unfold the sheet and then set it on a flat surface so that pages 4 and 1 are facing up. Set the sheet with the covers on top of the sheet and then bind them with a stapler along the spine. Fold the booklet to complete it.
