Who wrote the Oedipus cycle?

The exact authors of the Oedipus cycle are not precisely known, as these plays were likely passed down orally before they were eventually written down. The Greek playwright Sophocles is credited with writing the two most famous plays in the cycle, Oedipus the King and Oedipus at Colonus. Aeschylus is credited with writing an earlier version of the story, called The Suppliants, while Euripides is credited with writing the play Phoenician Women, which also features the story of Oedipus.
