Why does most Beatles merchandise have a green apple on it?

Beatles merchandise doesn't usually have a green apple featured on it. However, The Beatles logo, created in 1963 by the British designer and illustrator, Stuart Sutcliffe, the group's original bassist, included an apple because of the band's affinity with the Granny Smith apple.
