How to Make Sculptures Out of Clothing

Construct your own contemporary sculpture out of clothing. One of the most well-known sculptures from clothing was "Felt Suit" created in 1970 by the German artist, Joseph Beuys, who lived 1921 to 1986, according to the Tate Collection. The suit was created from one of the artist's own suits, made from felt fabric. Considered to be a self-portrait, it is displayed by hanging from a wooden coat hanger on a gallery wall.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose an outfit or item of clothing that has meaning or significance in your life. A dress you wore when your parents renewed their vows or a T-shirt you wore when you met your girlfriend are ideas. The artist Joseph Beuys created his felt suit sculpture because it relates to when his fighter plane was shot down during World War II. He was rescued by Tartars who rubbed him with fat and wrapped him in felt to keep him warm, according to the Walker Art Center.

Place gloves over your hands. Dip your item of clothing into transparent fabric hardener, which is made for mixed media artists. Squeeze out excess liquid from the clothing.

    • 3

Roll up your item of clothing until it is all bundled. Place it on plastic tarp to dry. Be sure the seam is facing downward. Repeat the dipping for another item of clothing. Squeeze out any excess liquid.

    • 4

Hang the clothing with a hanger and hang it on a portable wardrobe rack outside to let it drip any excess fabric hardener to the ground. In about one hour your clothing sculptures should start to dry.

    • 5

Display your sculptures after two weeks when the fabric hardener is completely set or cured. Place the bundled clothing sculpture on the floor or on a pedestal. Hammer a nail into a gallery wall approximately 9 feet off the ground to hang the clothing sculpture on a hanger.
