How to Make Animal Snow Sculptures

Snowmen are interesting projects to create with snow, but the same old snowman year-after-year can grow stale. A snow animal can shake up the old routine and provide you with more of an artistic challenge when sculpting. Keep the limbs of the animals large and sturdy so your snow sculpture doesn’t collapse on itself. Your snow should be firmly packed, allowing you to form it into study shapes with well-defined lines. Snow that is too slushy or powdery won’t form a proper shape for your snow animal.

Instructions

    • 1

Pack together an oval-shaped wall of snow that is 3 feet tall, 2 feet wide and 4 feet long to work as the animal body. Roll a ball of snow the size you want for the head of your animal that is at least a foot wide.

    • 2

Insert a 2-foot-long piece of 2-by-4 into the animal body where you want to position the head. Push it in so there is only a foot of exposed lumber left. Slide the snowball you will use for the animal’s head onto the exposed end of the 2-by-4.

    • 3

Shape the snow with your hands to form the shape of your animal lying down. For example, when making a lion, carve its hind legs and front legs resting close to the torso you created. Add snow to the head to shape a snout, ears and mane.

    • 4

Fill a water bottle with water and the food coloring you need for your animal. Shake the bottle to mix the colors fully. Spritz the sculpture lightly with the colored water to tint it so it stands out from the rest of the snow in your yard.
