How to Make Tape Sculptures

Tape sculptures are made by creating a mold of an object.  You can obtain the shape of an object using this technique but will not be able to transfer any great surface detail. With some practice and experimenting, you can make larger tape sculptures. The exterior of the sculpture depends on the type of tape used. You make a translucent sculpture by using clear tape that can be lit up with a light behind it for added effect. Start with a small object such as a ball or an action-figure.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap the figure in cling-wrap. Wrap the legs, the torso, and then the arms and head of the figure. Wrap it tightly to get as many of the features as possible to show through.

    • 2

Push the plastic into all the crevices with your fingers and make sure the entire surface area of the figure is tightly wrapped.

    • 3

Tape the sculpture using the clear packing tape. Use your fingers to adhere the tape tightly around the figure. Repeat the process, adding several more layers of tape.

    • 4

Cut a seam along the spine to release the figure from the tape. Cut the back of the arms down to the elbows and the legs to the knees. Make all the cuts going out from the spine.

    • 5

Remove the figure from the plastic carefully in order to preserve its shape. The cling-wrap should let the figure slide out easily; otherwise, lengthen the cuts. Form the released tape sculpture back into shape using your hands.

    • 6

Close the cuts by adding strips of clear tape. Cover all the cut seams until the sculpture is complete.
