How to Create Names in Tagging Letters

A tag is an artist's signature using graffiti-style lettering. Tags may be used as a way of marking pieces of artwork; however they are often seen as works of art in their own right. While certain fonts such as block and bubble letters have become recognizable staples in the graffiti world, it is important as a new artist to develop a unique character set. This will set you apart from the crowd and ensure your work is recognizable.

Instructions

    • 1

Print your name on paper in pencil. Decide on upper, lower or mixed cases.

    • 2

Write variations of the text that stretch and skew the lettering. Choose one style that you find appealing.

    • 3

Adjust the character spacing while maintaining the stretch and skew. Allow letters to overlap or span the page. Select a base font.

    • 4

Add ornamentation around, behind and over the text, like arrows, hearts, or dots.

    • 5

Connect additions to the base text. Alter areas of the text to create points of visual interest by erasing, for example, the horizontal line in an "A" or curving all the straight lines.

    • 6

      Thicken lines as desired.

    • 7

Copy the final sketch to a fresh piece of paper using a marker or pen.
