How to Use a Drawing Tablet With Clip Art

Drawing tablets can vastly improve your ability to create compelling digital artwork. The natural feel of drawing with a stylus on a tablet helps painters and illustrators to recreate the same kind of brush and pencil strokes that they use in a more traditional medium. However, when you first start using a drawing tablet some of the interfaces can seem a little strange. This is especially true when dealing with tasks that are not directly associated with drawing or painting. One task in particular that can be tricky is manipulating clip art.

Things You'll Need

  • Digital tablet
  • Photoshop (instructions for MS Paint also provided)

Instructions

    • 1

Open Photoshop and select the clip art you wish to use from your file. Copy the clip art and paste into your illustration. This will create a separate layer. Adjust the size and placement of the image by clicking the square shaped selection tool. Hover the stylus icon over the corner box. Press the tip of the stylus down on the tablet to act as a mouse click. Drag the selection square over your clip art. Small boxes on each corner will appear on the selection square. These allow you to adjust the size and position of the image.

    • 2

Click one of the corner boxes by pressing the stylus over the box and pressing down lightly on the tablet. While holding the stylus tip against the table, push the stylus diagonally left to increase the size of the image or diagonally right to shrink it. To change the direction of the image, hover your stylus tip just above the small box on the selection tool. Two curved arrow pointing in opposite directions should appear. Move the stylus to down to spin the image counter clockwise and up to spin the image clockwise. Click the middle squares in between the two corners to squish or stretch the image by pushing up or down with the stylus.

    • 3

Click the layers tab and select "add new layer". Move your cursor to the right hand side of the screen where the layers section is located. Click your cursor on the new layer and drag this down under the layer of your clip art. Click on your clip art layer and set it to "multiply". This will allow you to color your clip art without painting over the line work.

    • 4

Select a color from the color wheel to the left. Set the pixel size to 15-20 pixels. Select the layer just under your clip art. Press the stylus to the digital drawing pad and you can begin to color on the layer.

    • 5

Add extra details to the clip art by clicking "add new layer" and dragging the layer on top of the clip art. Select black as your color and turn the pixel size down to 5 pixels. Draw on extra details by pressing the stylus to the drawing tablet like a pencil.

    Using MS Paint.

    • 6

Open MS Paint if you do not have Photoshop. MS Paint is simpler and has fewer options but the basics are similar. Open your file of clip art. Use the selection to copy the art and then paste it into your illustration.

    • 7

Manipulate the size and position of the clip art in the same way as you do in Photoshop. Click and push up or down to rotate clockwise and counter clockwise. Click on the small corner squares and drag diagonally left and right to increase and decrease size. Be careful of overlapping shapes. There are no layers in MS Paint so if you overlap a shape you cover it permanently unless you undo your work.

    • 8

Color the clip art by painting directly over the art work. This is harder than in Photo hop as you now have to stay in the lines completely. Select the paint brush tool and a color and carefully color in your art as you would in a coloring book.
