How to Decorate a Retail Store in Black & White

The black-and-white color palette is a modern way to design a retail establishment. The color combination can create a dramatic look or a simple clean design depending on choice of furniture and accessories. Before painting walls, laying down floors and buying furniture or accessories for your store, take into consideration the merchandise you will carry and the type of customer who will frequent your shop. This will let you know if you should look for traditional pieces or classic pieces that fit into your black-and-white designer look.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint your walls black for a dramatic look. You can use a high-gloss finish paint, which gives a sophisticated vibe to the room. All four walls do not have to be black; paint three walls white and paint the fourth one black or add Harlequin wallpaper to it as an accent wall. For another look, add black wainscoting to white walls for a modern sophisticated look.

Put down black floors. This creates a contrast against white walls. It would give the store a gallery look. Black floor tiles, wooden floors or even painted black concrete floors can achieve the look. White floors with black borders would also complement the black-and-white palette.

Design bold ceilings. Flat white ceilings create little contrast or visual interest. Add texture and dimension by adding wood beams or a plastered molding. Hang a black chandelier or light fixture to break up a solid white ceiling.

Choose a black-and-white patterned piece of furniture such as a sofa or armchair. A white sofa with a black embroidered flower pattern is chic; a black-and-white striped couch is fun; and a black sofa with white piping is sophisticated. If you opt for a solid black or solid white couch, consider buying a leather, suede or fur piece to add a visual element.

Choose accessories with bold patterns. If the store has large blocks of solid of white furniture, adding accessories with bold black-and-white patterns or print can give the store visual interest. Add black and white patterned or floral throw pillows to the couch and chairs. Add a zebra rug to the floor for a chic touch. Select curtains that are rich in texture such as black velvet or a soft white curtain in lace.
