How to Create Pictures From Computer Keys

The American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) was created in 1963 to allow computers created by different manufacturers to communicate with each other. It would take 18 years before ASCII would finally be adopted by the computer industry in 1981. When ASCII made its public debut, it was not long before the curious method of rendering images in text, numbers and punctuation was born. ASCII art remains a popular technique for inserting images in forums and instant messages where only text is allowed. Creating ASCII art is difficult, but GlassGiant.com offers an online utility for creating ASCII images.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit GlassGiant.com and click “Fun & Games.” Click "ASCII Art" in the “Fun & Games” list. The link leads to the ASCII Art Generator.

    • 2

Set the “Max Width” and “Font Size” of the image under the “Choose a maximum column width and font size” heading. The range for width is from 40 to 400 characters, and the options for font size are “small” or seven point, “medium” or 12 point and “large” or 18 point.

    • 3

Enter the location of the image to be rendered into ASCII art under “From The Web” or “From Your Computer.” The address for the online image must be typed in full, but the path for an image on the computer will be entered automatically when found through the “Browse” button under “From Your Computer.”

    • 4

Select a color scheme for the image under the “Select Color Scheme” heading. The options are black text on a white background or white text on a black background.

    • 5

Click "Send" to create an ASCII according to the selections made and the image chosen. The ASCII image will appear in a new tab or window depending on the web browser used. Copy then paste the text into a word processing program to save the image.
