Fashion Art Projects

Fashion art projects can include creating and decorating clothing, personal accessories and home decor items with a variety of materials. All it takes to design your own wearable art or customized home accessories is a little imagination and a few artistic craft supplies. Explore your creativity and discover how you can make a personalized fashion statement.
  1. Tie-Dyed Fabric Art

    • Tie-dying became popular during the late 1960s and continues to be a popular fashion art project for teens and tweens. The random patterns you can create by bunching, folding and tying fabric are never the same twice. T-shirts are many people's favorite types of clothing to tie-dye, but you can create dyed fabric art using curtains, blankets and other natural or man-made clothing and home accessory fabrics. Specially formulated dyes and rubber bands are the two main tools you will need to tie-dye fabrics. A washing machine also helps to rinse out the dye. When creating the tie-dye designs, use small clumps of fabric if you prefer a busy pattern and large clumps if you prefer a broad pattern.

    Fashion Jewelry

    • One way to express your creativity and fashion sensibility is to design and create your own jewelry. Jewelry artists use a variety of tools to weave small beads, string-beaded strands and stitch-beaded patterns for necklaces, bracelets, rings and anklets. Select the jewelry project based on your skill level or your desire to learn a new type of art. One of the simplest jewelry projects for beginners is creating a fashionable beaded strand using any type and size of beads and elastic beading cord. Elastic cording knots easily and stretches over your hand, head or foot, so there is no need to add a clasp. Cut the elastic strand and stretch it before you add the beads. When the design is complete, join the ends together in a double overhand knot. It's always a good idea to cover jewelry cording knots with jeweler's glue.

    Beaded Clothing and Accessories

    • Decorate your jeans, shirts, belts and hair ribbons with beading to create wearable art. Enhance a plain sweater and other fabric items by stitching on sparkling crystal beads or glue flat-backed rhinestones to belts and ribbons. Decorate pillows, lampshades and curtain tie-backs with colorful glass embellishments. Stitching beads onto fabric requires minimum skills; use an up-and-down stitch to secure the beads in place. Fabric glue or viscous craft glue are both good choices for attaching beads and rhinestones to clothing and accessories. You can also purchase a tool that will secure rhinestones to fabric and other items to create dazzling fashion art projects.
