How to Cut Beer Bottles

A glass-cutting machine can make it a fairly easy process to create your own works of art. Save empty beer bottles to make art for your home ranging from novelty items to elegant pieces, depending on your intent and skill. Reusing bottles is also a way to decrease waste created when drinking beer or other beverages distributed in glass bottles. Basic bottle cutting is relatively straightforward, but once you learn the technique, the sky is the limit in the type of art you can create.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure the bottle is empty and the cap is off. You can peel off the label or not, depending on your preference.

    • 2

Rinse out the bottle. Beer can have a strong odor, so rinsing the bottle with rubbing alcohol or peroxide can be helpful.

    • 3

Place the bottle horizontally on a surface. Hold it steady so that you can rotate it and trace a line evenly. Hold the bottle with both hands, one on each end, and spin it slowly, allowing your glass cutting machine to trace a line around the bottle.

    • 4

Fill a pot with water and place iton your stove top and allow water to come to a boil. Let the bottle sit in the boiled water for about five minutes. After five minutes, pour out hot water and replace it with tap water, allowing the bottle to sit in cool water for another five minutes.

    • 5

Follow the instructions outlined by your glass cutter's manufacturer and make a clean break along the line you drew.

    • 6

Dampen a slab of sandpaper and smooth down the newly cut edge of the bottle. Your bottle is now cut and you can decorate or use it as you wish.
