Coffee filters make the inexpensive base to these colorful jellyfish. You will also need a clear plastic cup for each jellyfish, string and tissue paper or ribbons. Use water-soluble markers to color the coffee filter. Poke a hole in the bottom of the plastic cup and in the center of the coffee filter. Thread the string through the cup and the filter. The cup should be facing upside down with the coffee filter directly on top. Tape long strips of tissue paper along the inside rim of the cup so that they hang down.
Recycle plastic bottles into clear jellyfish in the style of artist Miwa Koizumi. You also will need scissors and string to hang them with. Cut off the bottom of the water bottle. Make long cuts down the side every inch of so. These strips should be approximately 2/3 of the way to the mouth of the bottle. Pull the strips down, starting to turn the bottle inside out. Place string or clear fishing line through the center to hang.
Create a jellyfish costume for a play or Halloween. Take a clear plastic umbrella and cover all the black or metal parts with white tape. Wrap the handle and around the spokes. Cut tentacles out of large bubble wrap. Tape strips end to end to make longer strips. Tape eight tentacles to the inside rim of the umbrella. Cut smaller bubble wrap strips that are at least 22 inches long and 5 inches wide. You will need at least 16 of these. Shred the ends and then tape to the inside spokes of the umbrella along with several thin strips of iridescent cellophane. Wear with a light colored leotard or sweats.
Build a diorama of jellyfish habitat. You will need a box, cardstock, paint and general craft supplies. Cut several small jellyfish shapes from a piece of card stock. Tape strings, ribbons or fabric strips around the edges as tentacles. Fish can be cut from card stock and embellished with glitter glue. Set aside. Paint the interior of the box with blue paint. Once dry, poke a hole in the top of the box for each jellyfish. Thread strings through the holes and attach the jellyfish so that they hang at different heights. The fish can be taped to toothpicks and stuck in the bottom of the box or strung from the top like the jellyfish. Add ocean plants and other creatures as desired.
