Corporate Grants for the Arts

The National Endowment for the Arts reports a gradual decline in interest for the arts over the years. Attendance at art museums or art performances was once near 40 percent, but is now closer to 35 percent. Attendance to ballet performances has dropped nearly 43 percent since 1982. As a result, art programs have had to cut back on their spending, and some have eliminated their existence altogether. The arts is a field most in need of funding and support. Fortunately, several corporations offer grants specifically for the purpose of promoting interest in the arts. Requirements for each grant vary by corporation, but generally, only non-profit organizations may apply.
  1. GlaxoSmithKIine

    • The GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Corporations is one of the top pharmaceutical companies in research for HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria medicine and vaccines for the World Health Organization. GSK offers corporate grants to arts and culture organizations that target their services to educational outreach in the public schools. Funds may not be used for general operating or building costs. GSK grant guidelines mandate that organizations be non-profit and not "political, religious, fraternal, profit-making, discriminatory, hobby-oriented or tax-subsidized." Grants are distributed on a year-round basis. Applicants may expect a response eight weeks after receipt.

To apply, organizations may obtain an application by writing to:

Applications are accepted every year between March and April, with award notifications released in September. Organizations must not be religious, endowments or health subsidiaries. To apply, members may only submit their information online via the Target website, at the link provided in the Resources section.

    Adobe

    • Adobe Systems Incorporated offers business and creative software worldwide. According to Adobe's Fast Facts, 90 percent of creative professionals have reported using Adobe on their own computers. Because of this, Adobe offers grants to community programs that focus on the creative arts. Organizations who use visual and multimedia art are given preference. Applications are only available by invitation, but interested organizations may send information packets to the corporation, requesting to be considered. Nominations are made annually by local Adobe Employees in selected regions around the world. Specific regions are outlined on Adobe's Corporate Affairs/Community Relations website.
