Instructions

    • 1

Gather and compile the content for the booklet -- informational content, photographs and advertisements, if applicable.

    • 2

Decide how many pages you will need in your booklet by assessing the amount of content you have for inclusion.

    • 3

Make a paper mock-up of your booklet. Do this to roughly visualize the layout of the booklet's content. Open your layout pad. Tear some sheets out of the sketchbook carefully. A 32 page booklet will require 16 pages to create a mock-up. Keep the pages together and fold them neatly in half. Sew along the spine of the booklet with a needle and thread to act as a binding. Binding stitches should be running stitches about an inch in length.

    • 4

Start designing a rough layout for the booklet. Using a pencil, start working from the front cover by roughly writing the title of the booklet where you visualize it placed on the page. Draw a rough sketch of your front cover image, or stick a photocopy of the image on the page using a glue stick. (Write pencil notes as a quick alternative.) Add notes about other information that needs to go on the front page. Repeat this process until you have finished a rough design mock-up.

    • 5

Indicate on the back page of the rough mock-up what type of spiral binding you wish to use for the booklet. Draw a rough sketch on the spine of the booklet mock-up, imagining either thick plastic binding or thin wire coil spirals.

    • 6

Open your desk top publishing program, like Microsoft Publisher. Using your mock-up as a reference, start choosing page layouts, page colors, type of font, font color and pitch to use per page. Start laying out your pages with informational content and images until you have completed the desk top publishing design of your booklet. Save your booklet onto a USB storage pen.

    • 7

Take your USB storage pen to a printing and binding shop. Print a finished design sample of your booklet. Ask them to also spiral bind it with a binding of your choice to complete the design process for a spiral bound booklet.
