How to Make an Avatar of a Photograph

Avatar is one of the few Sanskrit words that has found frequent use in the English language. Although now a common word used in a variety of ways, avatar originally described the personification of a Hindu deity on earth. In recent times, the word has come to be a title of a book, a movie, a prototype computer and a small personal image posted by online users.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the photograph face down on the glass plate of a scanner.

    • 2

Preview the image and then scan the picture.

    • 3

Save the scanned image as a jpeg file and transfer to your computer. To simplify the process, the image can be saved at 72 pixels/inch.

    • 4

Crop the image so the picture frame only contains the visual information you need. A head shot commonly is used in an avatar, but a full-length or half-body pose can be used.

    • 5

Check the size requirements for the website where the picture will be used as an avatar.

    • 6

Open your photo image editor. Use Photoshop, if possible, but the iPhoto image editor can be used on a Mac.

    • 7

Make any color and size adjustments, so the image is the same size or slightly larger than the required size.

    • 8

Give the picture a name and save as a jpeg file.

    • 9

Upload the picture to the website.
