Chocolate Art Projects

In addition to making desserts or candy with chocolate, you can use it to create art. Use chocolate to make various shapes, sculptures or even paintings. Making chocolate art is also an excellent project for children. The artwork can be displayed on a cake or on other desserts. With chocolate, you can make artwork that is both beautiful and delicious.
  1. Modeling Chocolate

    • Make modeling chocolate. Melt 10 oz. of any type of chocolate in a double boiler. Turn off the heat and add 1/3 cup of light corn syrup to the melted chocolate, stir and fold the mixture with a spatula. Place the resulting ball of chocolate "clay" on a sheet of wax paper and let it cool for two hours. Work with the chocolate to make shapes and figures, dusting it with cocoa powder if it becomes sticky. With this mixture you can make any number of projects, including chocolate shapes or figures. Since the modeling chocolate has the texture of Play-Doh, children will enjoy shaping the chocolate into artwork. To give your chocolate extra color, add a few drops of an oil-based food coloring to white chocolate and make cake decorations like flowers, hearts or action figures.

    Chocolate Molds

    • You can make simple chocolate artwork by using chocolate molds. You will need to temper the chocolate to make sure it does not become greasy or chalky in your mold. Do this by melting one part of chopped chocolate in a double boiler. Add an equal part of chopped chocolate to the melted chocolate. Stir the pieces into the melted chocolate until the entire mixture melts and continue to stir for a few minutes until smooth. Pour the chocolate into the mold of your choice and put it in the refrigerator. When you remove it from the mold a few hours later, you will have a beautiful shape to work with or display.

    Chocolate Shapes

    • You can draw free-hand shapes of chocolate to make original artwork or use cookie cutters to form different shapes of chocolate. To make free-hand chocolate shapes, melt and temper your chocolate and place it in a pastry bag. Draw shapes on sheets of wax paper or silicone baking sheets using the pastry bag to squeeze out the chocolate. Another option is to pour the melted chocolate into cookie cutters to form shapes. Allow the chocolate shapes to dry and use the pieces separately to decorate a dessert or as stand-alone art. You can also paste the chocolate shapes together with more melted chocolate to form a larger art piece.

    Sculpting and Painting With Chocolate

    • Take a block of chocolate and carve it as you would a piece of wood or clay with a knife. Continue to whittle the chocolate down until you have your desired shape. Paint the outside of the sculpture with melted chocolate to smooth the surface or add bits of color from white chocolate mixed with oil-based food dye. To paint with chocolate, melt white chocolate and mix it with food coloring to form different colors of chocolate "paint." Make a canvas of 1/8-inch-thick melted chocolate on wax paper and allow it to dry. Use clean paintbrushes dipped in the different colored chocolate paints to draw any picture you wish. Once dry, cover the painting with a confectionery glaze and display your chocolate artwork.
