How to Hang an Unframed Canvas

Due to the cost of framing, many people decide to hang their canvases unframed. This has become especially popular in recent years. Because of this, many artists and major retailers sell artwork that is painted and finished on all sides. These types of paintings are created on canvases with what is known as a "gallery wrap," ranging anywhere from 3/4 inch to 2 inches thick. This effect gives the painting a three-dimensional quality that looks appealing from all angles.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the canvas in the desired position on a wall. Use a level to ensure that the canvas is properly positioned.

    • 2

Create two small dots with a pencil directly above the top edge of the canvas. Make these dots approximately 3 to 4 inches in from the outer edges of the canvas. Set the canvas aside once you have made the dots.

    • 3

Turn your canvas over and measure the vertical length of the top stretcher bar with a tape measure. Starting from the dots you made on the wall, create two new dots below each one according to to the measurement of the vertical stretcher bar. This will accommodate for the size of the extra materials at the back of the canvas and allow the painting to meet up correctly with the original dots.

    • 4

Pound two nails into the wall with a hammer where the bottom two dots were made.

    • 5

Hang your canvas on the nails.
