Sketch the outline of a design in pencil. A light border, drawn with a black and white photograph or photocopy as a reference, gives the artwork some basic shape and helps later as you begin to add value with stippling.
Study the image. Focus on the dark and light areas and understand that in your drawing, the darker areas will require a higher concentration of dots while the lighter areas will require fewer dots.
Add dots to the paper, using the photograph or photocopy as a reference. Begin slow and add just a few dots. Carefully add more dots to darker areas of the image.
Check your work periodically. Have a friend hold up your drawing or tape it to a wall and take a step back. Add more dots to any areas that do not appear dark enough.
