Wearable Art Projects

Wearable art is any type of art that can be used as clothing or accessories. This includes jewelry and clothing, but also costumes, garments made from unusual materials and art designed to be worn on your nails. There are a large variety of wearable art projects you can do at home that will allow you to show your artistic flair and fashion style at the same time.
  1. Tie Dye

    • Tie dye lets you express your creativity and style. There are many ways to make a tie dye garment. One easy way is to first soak a plain t-shirt in water mixed with sodium carbonate (3/4 cup sodium carbonate to each gallon of water) for around five minutes. Wring the shirt out and fold, twist and tie the shirt any way you wish. Wrap rubber bands around the t-shirt every two inches or so, starting with the center. Pour prepared dye into squeeze bottles and squeeze dye into each section -- front and back. Let the dye set for 24 hours, and then rinse the shirt under cold water until the water runs clear. Cut off the rubber bands and let the shirt air dry.

    Nail Art

    • Even with little experience, you can turn your nails into art by painting simple designs on them. You can vary the designs to match your outfit, or your mood. Begin by painting your nails with a base color. Then paint outlines of a design on each nail using black nail polish and a toothpick or a tiny brush. Simple designs include faces, geometric shape, flowers or rainbows. Fill in the outlines with different colors of nail polish and cover the design with a layer of nail varnish to prevent chipping.

    Button Covers

    • Button covers are an easy way to change the look of any outfit to suit your mood and style. This project is good for children, as well as adults. For simple button covers, cut shapes out of craft foam. Draw your design on the foam using permanent markers or paint. Color in your design, or paint it. Use a craft knife to cut slits for the buttons, on the uncolored or unpainted side of the button covers. Put on a shirt and slip the button covers over your buttons. You can also cut shapes from felt and cut a slit for the button.

    Felt Pins

    • This craft project is versatile and can be used as jewelry or an accent piece. You can make any design or shape you want. To make flowers, draw a variety of flower shapes and sizes on colored felt and cut out the pieces. Layer several felt flowers together and hold them together by sewing a few stitches in the center of the flower, using embroidery needle and thread. You can also stitch on leaves and decoration such as ribbons or beads. Use a hot glue gun to glue a pin and backing on the back of the pin. Affix the flower to a hair clip instead of a pin, and you'll have a unique hair clip.
