How to Remove Captive Beads

A captive bead ring is the most common type of body jewelry, worn in a wide variety of piercings. Ears, septums, nipples, eyebrows, navels, lips and nostrils heal well with surgical stainless steel captive bead rings. Also known as CBRs, captive bead rings use pressure to hold a bead in place. The bead has small indentations on each side, allowing the prongs of the ring to fit snugly and keep the bead from popping out.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your hands and your fully healed piercing with antibacterial soap and hot water. Dry them with an unused paper towel. Any water left on your hands or the ring will make it difficult to open.

    • 2

Rotate the ring so that the bead is on the outside of the piercing. Leave enough room below the bead that you can comfortably grip the lower half of the ring.

    • 3

Hold the bottom of the ring steady with your non-dominant hand.

    • 4

Push the bead sideways with your dominant hand until it snaps out of the ring.

    • 5

Rotate the ring until the opening slides out of your piercing. Wash the jewelry well with antibacterial soap and hot water, dry it with a clean paper towel, and store it in a clean place until you are ready to wear it again.
