How to Get a Nose Ring Hole to Close

With correct aftercare, nostril piercings take between six months and a year to heal completely. A healed piercing is a small tube of scar tissue. Because of this, if you've had a nostril piercing for more than a year, you may always have a scar. However, if your piercing is less than a year old, removing the jewelry will usually cause the hole to close. There are two primary kinds of nostril jewelry -- captive bead rings and nostril screws. Each requires a different removal method.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your hands for two full minutes with warm water and antibacterial soap. Rinse them, then lather another small drop of antibacterial soap on your fingertips. Use the lather to wash the inside and outside of your nostril piercing. Rinse the soap off your piercing and use a clean paper towel to dry your skin.

    • 2

Rotate a captive bead ring so that the bottom of the bead is even with the bottom edge of your nostril.

    • 3

Hold the ring just beneath the bead with one hand. With the thumb and forefinger of the other hand, push sideways on the bead until it pops out of the ring.

    • 4

Rotate the ring toward your face until you have one prong on either side of the hole -- one inside your nose and one outside. Pull down and slide the ring off your nose.

    • 5

Remove a nostril screw by hooking your fingernail behind the bead from above. Push down until the bend in the jewelry comes through the outside of your nose. Grasp the bead and twist as if loosening a screw. Gently pull down and out at the same time until the jewelry comes out of your nose.

Continue following your piercer's aftercare instructions until the piercing is completely healed and the hole is gone.
