Methods of Silk Screen Painting

There are four main methods of silk screen printing or painting. Each method centers around blocking parts of the surface which is being printed onto, to form a design or image. All the methods use a printing screen, ink and a squeegee. It is the way in which the ink is blocked from printing on the final surface that changes in each method.
  1. Paper Stencil

    • Transfer or draw an image onto a piece of paper. Cut around this image using a craft knife. Remove the cut out pieces. This leaves you with a paper stencil. Place this stencil on top of another piece of paper. Line the silk screen frame on top of the stencil. Use masking tape to mask off any areas around the underside of the screen that are not covered by the paper stencil. Place a blob of ink on the top of the screen. Pull the ink across the screen using the squeegee at a 45-degree angle. Remove the screen by pulling up from right to left.

    Negative/Screen Filler

    • Print or draw your design onto a piece of paper. Place your screen on top of this design and trace it onto the screen using a pencil. Mix the screen filler. Place the screen on a raised surface so that the screen surface is not touching anything. Use the screen filler to paint the areas of your design that you do not want to print. Leave the screen to dry in a horizontal position. Place the screen onto a piece of paper and print as in Step 1.

    Positive/Drawing Fluid

    • Place your screen over your design or image and trace it onto the screen with a pencil. Raise the silk screen so it is not touching anything. Paint drawing fluid on the areas of your design you want to print. Leave the screen to dry on the level raised surface. Mix the screen filler. Use the squeegee to create an even layer of screen filler over the whole screen. Leave the screen to dry in a flat position. Rinse both sides of the screen with cold water to remove the drawing fluid. Leave to dry. Place the screen on a piece of paper and print as in Step 1.

    Photographic Emulsion

    • Print or draw your image onto acetate. Mix the photo emulsion as directed on the packet. Use the squeegee to spread a thin even coat of photo emulsion over both sides of the screen. Leave to dry horizontally in a dark place. Set up your exposure lamp. Place a piece of black paper directly under the lamp. Place the screen on top of the black paper with the acetate drawing on top of the screen. Follow the recommended light exposure time on the packet. Rinse the screen with warm water to remove photo emulsion. Leave to dry. Place the screen on a piece of paper and print as in Step 1.
