How to Make Your Own Dreamcatcher Tattoo

Dreamcatchers are traditional American Indian objects meant to catch the dreams that are sent to you by sacred spirits while you sleep. There are a variety of designs and specific meanings to each individual design, but the most basic dreamcatcher is a bound wreath of wooden sticks with feathers hanging down from it. Several details can go into the design to make it unique and personal. Just keep in mind, the more detailed the tattoo, the larger it will need to be to display adequately.

Instructions

    • 1

Sketch the basic outline of the dreamcatcher on a sheet of blank white paper, using a regular pencil. Keep it as simple as possible; do not shade any areas or fill in any spots will color, at least not yet. Take your time and correct any mistakes with your eraser. The sketch should be complete before moving to Step 2.

    • 2

Trace over the pencil lines with your thin black marker. Do not shade or color the image yet, but if there are certain lines that need to be thicker than your marker, simply go over the area multiple times or as many as is necessary to achieve the desired thickness.

    • 3

Flip the paper over and copy the design onto the back side of the paper with the thin black marker. This is necessary because it is the reverse image of your dreamcatcher that will be stenciled, so it will lay frontward when applied to your skin. Do this step in a well-lit area to ensure the lines show through.

    • 4

Tape a piece of stencil paper over the reverse image of the dreamcatcher to prevent the papers from sliding apart when tracing.

    • 5

Trace the image onto the stencil paper using the tattoo stencil pencil. Go slowly and use caution; any mistake will require you to start over with a fresh piece of stencil paper.

    • 6

Give the stencil to your artist and allow him or her to shave the area of your skin that is to be tattooed. Wipe the area down with a stencil solution or glycerin-based deodorant to help the stencil ink stick to you.

    • 7

Press the ink side of the stencil against the prepared portion of your skin and hold it in place for at least 10 seconds before peeling away.
