How to Design Your Own Tattoo Fonts

Scripted tattoos range from a single word to several sentences and are one of the most direct forms of expression, requiring far less explanation than an abstract picture. To make the tattoo even more personal and meaningful, you can design the font yourself and have an experienced artist transfer the image onto your body. The size of the letters and length of the script will dictate the appropriate placement for the tattoo. Keep in mind that the more detailed the font, the more space it will require to display adequately.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw the letters in pencil on the paper. It may take several attempts and erasing lines to make corrections may be necessary, so write lightly.

    • 2

Trace over the pencil lines with a black marker once the letters are exactly as you want them. Do not start tracing the letters in black ink until the entire image of the letters is completed in pencil.

    • 3

Flip the paper over and copy the image onto the other side using your black marker. This reverse image is the actual one that will be transferred onto tracing paper by the artist and stenciled to your body in order to read frontward.

    • 4

Give the paper to your artist and allow him to trace the image onto stencil paper and apply it to your skin.
