Christian-Themed Quilting Projects

Quilters can create beautiful quilts that communicate their Christian traditions through the art of quilting. Quilting became an American folk art in the 19th century when quilters began to design specific American applique and patchwork designs. Quilters often quilt designs that include symbols which express their heritage or beliefs. Embedding Christian themes in a quilt allows the quilter to create meaningful and spiritual artwork.
  1. Verses

    • Many Christian-themed quilting projects include Biblical verses embroidered into the quilt. The quilter may embroider the verse on either the front or the back of the quilt or along the quilt's border. The quilter may include any Biblical verse that holds meaning, but popular verses for a quilt may include verses that relate to family (Acts 10:2), faith (John 14:6 ), love (Romans 12:9 ), harmony (Colossians 3:12-14) ) or peace (John 14:27).

    Symbols

    • Christian-themed quilts may display specific Christian symbols. Some common Christian symbols that quilters can quilt into their quilts may include the cross (a universal symbol of Christianity), fish (an early Christian symbol, always on alert with its unblinking eyes), an egg (a representation of birth and rebirth), lamb (a symbol of Christ as the Paschal Lamb) or a dove (a symbol of peace).

    Image or Scene

    • A Christian quilt may exhibit an image of a Biblical scene. Quilters can create quilts that graphically illustrate a story or an image from the Bible. Some quilts may exhibit images of Old Testament stories such as Abraham preparing to sacrifice his son Isaac, Jacob and the Coat of Many Colors, Moses and the Burning Bush or the Exodus from Egypt. New Testament themes on a quilt may include Jesus feeding the multitudes, the Nativity scene or Jesus with his disciples.

    Numerous Images

    • A quilter may create a Christian-themed quilt which displays several Biblical images in different quilt blocks that combine to create one quilt. Quilters that create such a quilt may compile blocks to create a quilt of "Animals of the Bible" in which each quilt block displays a different animal. Other such quilts may include "Women in the Bible" or "The Bible and Nature" with quilt block of nature-inspired images.
