Blow up balloons to create the shape of your animal mask. One balloon creates two masks. Cut strips of newspaper and dip them in a half-water, half-glue mixture. Lay the dipped strips over the balloon. Put at least two layers of newspaper over each balloon and place them on newspaper to dry. When they are totally dry, cut the balloons in half with an exacto knife to create two mask bases. Use masking tape and newspaper to build eyes, ears, nose and mouth of the animal face you want to create. Cover the animal features with more newspaper dipped in the water-glue mixture and let dry. When your mask is dry, paint details on it and display it for all to see.
Use hardening clay or potters sculpting clay to make clay heads. Do not use clay that must be fired in a kiln. Play around with a small piece of clay to get familiar with the texture. Make or purchase a wooden base with a dowel in the center. Choose a base big enough to support the head you plan on creating. Ball a piece of newspaper up in the shape of the head and secure it to the top of the dowel on the base. Cover the newspaper in clay to form the head. Add small amounts of water to the clay if it is too dry. Use more clay to form facial features. Use pencils, forks, fingers and sticks to add texture details to the head. If you plan on working on the clay head again before it is finished, cover it with a plastic bag so it does not dry out. When the head is finished, let it dry for several days to a week. Clay heads can be left their natural clay color or painted. When the head is complete, paint a layer of varathane to strengthen it.
Three-D amusement parks explore the three-dimensional aspect of art. Use artists tape, scissors, wooden skewers and a cardboard base. Artists tape is sticky on one side and is sturdy enough to hold forms. Purchase several different colors of artists tape. Use the tape to create roller coasters, carts and people in an amusement park. Use wooden skewers for extra support and height. Make your 3D amusement park any way you like. You may benefit from reference images of roller coasters.
Wire sculpture gives you the ability to take two dimensional images off the page and explore them from different angles. You will need plenty of wire and pliers. Gather visual references for the sculpture you want to create. Use hand gestures, natural forms like trees, animals, faces or simply create abstract expressions. Begin by experimenting with a small piece of wire. Get familiar with its capabilities and limitations. Decide on the form you want to create and bend the wire to create your wire sculpture.
