How to Carve Caricature Farm Animals

A caricature is a drawing that exaggerates the features of the subject. For example, a cow's eyes might be drawn over-sized or a pig might be depicted as a lot rounder than an actual pig. Use basic tools such as a paring knife and orangewood sticks to carve your chosen design out of a bar of soap.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the wrapper from the soap. Leave the soap in open air for 24 hours. Place the soap on a tray. Scrape off any imprinted lettering or design from the top of the soap. This will leave a flat blank surface on your soap.

    • 2

Select or design a farm-animal caricature. You must carve your design, so avoid complicated or highly detailed images. Transfer the animal caricature onto a sheet of tracing paper using a pencil.

    • 3

Lower the tracing paper drawn-on side down onto the bar of soap. Adjust the placement of the tracing paper until the design is centered on your soap.

    • 4

Trace or shade over all of the lines of your caricature design with a pencil. Lift the tracing paper away from the bar of soap. The design will have transferred onto the soap.

    • 5

Carve 1/4 of an inch outside the traced line. Use the paring knife to cut through the bar of soap around the outline of your design. Only cut away small pieces of soap. Cutting larger pieces of soap off the bar can make it crack or disintegrate. Hold the soap in one hand and cut with the other.

    • 6

Carve all around the outline of your design. Once you have a rough outline of your farm animal, place the knife on the traced line of the design and scrape it down toward the cut edge of the soap. Use your knife as you would use a peeler to create a smooth edge all around the outline of your design.

    • 7

Carve the finer detail of your image into the soap with orangewood sticks. For example, carve in the animals facial features or any pattern they might have on their coat.

    • 8

Leave the carving to dry out for 48 hours. Rub the surface of the soap with a paper napkin, then with your finger tips. This will polish your carving.
