How to Become a Mural Artist

Murals are large works of art painted directly onto a permanent surface, such as a wall, ceiling or floor. They can depict life-like or fantasy scenes and sometimes tell a story as a viewer gazes from panel to panel. However, because these mysterious works of art do get painted onto permanent surfaces, you must create several drafts on a smaller scale to prepare yourself for painting murals in a public location.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint as many murals as you can. Though it may seem like common sense, creating murals on your own time is the best way to become a professional mural artist. Work on the walls in your home, your garage or in the homes of friends and family. This will also teach you what supplies you need for your unique pieces, such as rollers, brushes, paint, rulers and ladders, and how to improve your mural technique.

    • 2

Design your own portfolio. This is a collection of your work, displayed in a clear, attractive manner. Since you want to be a mural artist, you will not be able to carry around your actual artistic pieces. Take pictures of your work and put them into a neat, organized binder.

    • 3

Design and print business cards and brochures with your name, occupation (mural artist) and your contact information on them. Also, set up your own website so that potential clients can contact you and view your work online. Advertise yourself with these, as well as through social-media networking and word of mouth.

Speak with clients beforehand to determine the vision they desire for their murals. Do your best to satisfy your clients while still staying true to your artistic style and capabilities. When you are finished painting the mural, ask the client if you can photograph it for your portfolio. Also ask the client if he would mind being a reference for you. Keep a list of happy clients to offer as recommendation to potential buyers.
