How to Use Creative Perspective

Perspective is one of the most important parts of any artistic medium, apart from the personal style and aesthetic of the artist. Learning to use perspective creatively can make your photographs captivating, draw the audience into your painting or provide interesting commentary in a drawing or sketch. In basic terms, perspective is a graphical term used to describe the approximate representation of images in relation to the viewer as well as in relation to each other on any medium.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine what images and figures your frame will contain. Whether you are snapping a photo or painting a landscape, you must be conscious of what objects will be in the shot in order to properly order them in perspective to each other and the audience.

    • 2

Decide what you are trying to convey with your picture. You may want to draw attention to the fate of a lone man among a crowd or pursue something more abstract, such as the feeling of longing or fear. By settling on one emotion or mood you wish to evoke, you can decide how to go about ordering your objects in the image.

    • 3

Consider the possibilities for attaining the mood or emotion you wish to express. If your image involves human beings or animals, you may wish to give the viewer of your art the same perspective as a person or animal in the picture, viewing the world as they do. If not, you may wish to portray inanimate objects from far away, extremely close up or from strange angles in order to add zest and uniqueness to your image.

    • 4

Experiment with several perspectives. Portraying the most creative and interesting perspective may take time and effort, which is why many famous artists have several variations of the same image, in order to find the version that best fits the overall idea of what the image should mean or evoke in the viewer.
