How to Care for Tragus Piercings

A tragus piercing goes through the small flap of cartilage inside your ear, near your face. Because cartilage piercings are notoriously difficult to heal, proper aftercare of your new tragus piercing is essential. With correct cleansing and minimal contact with your hands, hair, clothing and bedding, your tragus piercing can heal in as little as four months, though up to one year is common. All body piercings, with the exception of oral piercings, require the same aftercare procedure.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean your tragus piercing with saline solution twice a day. Many piercers sell spray-on saline solution, but you can also make your own by mixing 1/8 teaspoon of sea salt with 1 cup of hot water. If you mix your own saline solution, choose an iodine-free sea salt. Pour the solution into a shot glass and immerse your piercing for 10 minutes, twice a day. If immersion proves too difficult, soak a piece of sterile gauze in the solution and lay it over your piercing. Gently clean the inside of your tragus with the gauze as well.

Wash your piercing with antibacterial soap immediately after soaking. Always wash your hands before touching your piercing, then rinse them and lather them again to wash the piercing. Pat your tragus dry with a clean paper towel.

    • 3

Change your pillowcases regularly when healing a tragus piercing, especially if the piercing bleeds in the night. Sleep on the other side of your head whenever possible. Contact with dirty bedding can introduce bacteria into your piercing.

    • 4

Wash your hair often, and keep it pulled back if it's long. Take care not to let styling products come into contact with your tragus piercing.

    • 5

Keep your hands off your piercing unless you are cleaning it and never allow anyone else to touch your tragus while it heals.
