Rosh Hashanah Teen Craft

Rosh Hashanah, which means "Head of the Year," is the celebration of the Jewish New Year. Observed on the first day of the Hebrew month of Tishrei, the high holiday is followed by 10 days of prayer. Customs of Rosh Hashanah include eating round bread known as challah, apples, honey and other sweet foods. Some simple crafts can reflect the happiness aspect of the holiday and still give teens a chance to participate in the celebration.
  1. Apple Card

    • Cut a piece of card stock or cardboard and fold it in half to make the card. Pour red paint onto a paper plate. Cut an apple in half and poke a fork into the rounded side to use as a handle. Dip the cut side into the paint, and press the painted side down onto the front or inside of the card. Allow the card to dry. Use markers to decorate the card or write Rosh Hashanah greetings.

    Honey Jar

    • Gather a small glass jar with a lid, yellow glass paint, black tape, glue, about 4 inches of thin wire and half a Styrofoam ball about the diameter of the jar. Wash the jar and remove all labels. Paint the entire jar with the yellow paint. Using the black tape, apply horizontal lines around the jar. Glue the Styrofoam onto the top of the jar and paint a bee's face. Poke two small holes for wires to serve as antennae. On the high holiday, fill the jar with honey and dip an apple and the challah in it.

    Apple Honey Holder

    • Get a hollow rubber ball, fine marker, craft knife, air-hardening clay, fine brush, aluminum foil, sandpaper, red, black and green acrylic poster paints, and some apple slices and honey. Draw a thin line around the ball about one-third from the top. Cut along the line to remove that portion of the ball. Lay the cut top back in its place. Apply a thin layer of clay to the outside of the ball, including a bit more on the bottom to serve as a base. Make the stem and leaves from clay and attach them to the top of the ball. Sand as needed. With the brush and black paint, apply a holiday greeting or message on the body of the apple. Lay an aluminum foil lining inside the apple. Pour in the honey, and you're ready to dip the apples.

    Apple Rubbing Card

    • Get a piece of cardboard, pencil, glue, thin cord or rope, scissors and bond paper. Draw a simple apple outline on the bottom half of the piece of cardboard. Add red blotches on the inside of the drawing. Trace the entire design with glue, and press the cord of rope onto all areas where you've drawn. Put the white bond paper on top of the textured drawing. Rub with crayon or felt markers. Fold the card and write a Rosh Hashanah greeting or message inside.
