How to Make a Small Drum for Pre-K

Pre-K, or pre-kindergarten, is the time when your child first attends an institution specifically for learning. Most pre-K students are 3 to 5 years old and learn best through arts and crafts or games. A way for young children to learn about music is by making homemade instruments such as maracas or drums out of household items. Making drums in the classroom expands creativity and allows students to have their very own band in the classroom.

Instructions

    • 1

Empty an oatmeal canister completely and tear the label off, exposing the cardboard. Cut a piece of construction paper to fit around the outside of the canister. Provide a variety of colors to choose from.

    • 2

Decorate each canister using crayons, markers or paint. You can even add glitter or beads to personalize each drum.

    • 3

Glue a piece of ribbon on one side of the canister approximately an inch down. Then glue the other end of the ribbon to the other side. Make the ribbon long enough for the child to place around her shoulders or neck to hold it.

    • 4

Teach the children to beat on the drum using their hands. If you want a variety of drum noises, use different sized containers for each child.
