Find or purchase stamps to suit your interests. If you intend to create a collage, then you can use stamps of all sorts. If you would like to make something with a more traditional feel, then stick to stamps that create textures and patterns.
Purchase ink pads to suit your color palette. Purchasing solely the primary colors is a good choice, as they can be layered to create new colors and effects.
Place your canvas on a flat surface.
Use a pencil to create the outlines of the image that you wish to create if you are creating a structured piece.
Press a stamp onto an ink pad.
Firmly push the stamp onto the canvas for a darker effect.
Press the stamps lightly onto the canvas for a light and airy effect.
For an abstract piece, use stamps of various imprints, placing them about according to what you feel in the moment. It does not have to take on a form, as the design needs only to represent your personal tastes.
Stay inside of your pencil guidelines if you are creating a structured piece.
Continue to ink and press various stamps until your piece is complete.
Dip the tip of a sponge into some water, and wipe it across the canvas in order to blend the inks. You may also leave the piece as is for a more natural look.
Allow the piece to dry before touching it again.
Spray the canvas with some aerosol hairspray or artist's fixative in order to preserve the piece.
