How to Make Art With Screen Printing

Screen printing has been used by artists since 1000 AD. Its first recorded use was by Chinese artists printing onto silk, which is where silkscreen printing, or serigraphy, got its name. Since then, it has become a popular technique used to print designs onto fabrics and clothes.

Instructions

  1. Making the Design

    • 1

Create a design using a computer design program or scan in an original sketch or drawing.

    • 2

Separate the different colors into layers, as these will need to be printed separately using different screens. Design programs such as PhotoShop are suitable for this. Use the "cut" tool to separate each color and save as a separate file.

    • 3

Print the different layers of the design onto transparencies. Most modern printers have no problems printing onto these.

    Transferring to the Screen

    • 4

Apply a layer of UV-sensitive emulation paint to a clean and dry screen using the scoop coater. If needed, clean the screen first using a degreaser and water.

    • 5

Leave the screen to dry. You may want to prepare the screens in advance as this can take several hours.

    • 6

Tape one design transparency to the back of the screen making sure it is upside down and back-to- front. This will ensure it prints the right way onto the cloth. Each layer of the design should be taped to a different screen, or reuse the same screen once the whole process is complete.

    • 7

Leave the screen on top of some black paper and under a 150W light bulb for between 10 and 20 minutes. The larger the design, the longer the exposure time needed.

    • 8

Wash off the UV emulsion with water. This will leave just your design on the screen.

    • 9

Repeat these steps for all layers of the design. If you only want to use one screen, go back to Step 1 of this section after having completed the rest of the steps in Section 3.

    Printing

    • 10

Place the screen into the screen press and adjust the height so it is about 1/8-inch above the cloth on which you are printing. A screen press is a wooden frame that holds the screen level and can be adjusted to position the screen accurately above the printing cloth.

    • 11

Apply tape to the edges of the screen so paint does not leak out.

    • 12

Pour a generous amount of paint onto the screen below the pattern and drag across the screen with the squeegee. You may want to do a test-run of this using some old cloth.

    • 13

Allow this color to dry on the cloth.

    • 14

Repeat these steps for the additional layers and colors.
