The Maine College of Art is a highly regarded art school, and it has the greatest number and variety of programs in the city. At the college, students have access to four academic programs: a four-year bachelor of fine arts undergraduate program, a two-year full-time master of fine art graduate program, a 10-month post-baccalaureate certificate program in art education, and a continuing education program that offers open enrollment courses for adults and teens.
You can choose from a number of major fields of study, including art history, ceramics, graphic design, new media, photography, sculpture, printmaking, metalsmithing and jewelry, and painting. MECA is located in Portland's Arts District and boasts small class sizes and a low student-to-faculty ratio.

The University of Southern Maine is a large university with more than 10,000 students and seven colleges. Within the College of Arts and Sciences there are four-year degree programs in studio art, art history and art education. Studio art students who want a bachelor of fine arts degree have the option of concentrations in ceramics, digital art, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture.
If you don't want or need a four-year degree, USM also provides students with a certificate of completion after taking 18 credit hours in foundations of studio art and art history. The certificate demonstrates a fundamental understanding of the study and practice of visual art.
