How to Draw Glowing Energy

Glowing energy is frequently seen in comic books and other cartoon-type drawings. Because glowing energy is usually a fantasy element in a drawing, there is no wrong or right way to draw it. However, there are a few easy techniques that you can use that will be easily recognized.

Instructions

  1. Technique 1

    • 1

Draw the object that will be glowing with energy. This may be a sword, a crown, a bomb or some scientific, radioactive piece of equipment. Use a medium to soft grade pencil -- 3B or softer.

    • 2

Draw a series of jagged lines surrounding the glowing item, with a space between the object and the jagged lines. These jagged lines may appear to be serrated like a knife, or straight in and out, like the edges of a cartoon Christmas tree.

    • 3

Thicken the line around the glowing energy by drawing over the line several times. The lines should not be sketchy, but smooth and bold.

    Technique 2

    • 4

Draw the object that will be glowing with energy.

    • 5

Shade the area around the object so that the background is an even gray color. Run a blending stick over the shading so that the background is smooth.

    • 6

Erase a border from the background around the object, to show that the object is glowing. The more space you erase around the object, the larger the field of glowing energy. The edges of this border may be jagged, like the jagged edges of the glowing border you made in Technique 1.
