How to Put a Lyre Easel Together

The Lyre easel is a classic A-frame easel that is sturdy and cost effective for most artists. The easel has an adjustable top canvas support, and some adjust from the bottom as well. Some have brush or palette holders. Lyre easels are made by many manufacturers and craftsmen in the United States and worldwide, but typically all assemble in the same basic way. They can be assembled using a screwdriver or power tools. Some use normal screws while others use washers and wingnuts to secure the parts.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay all of the pieces on the floor and arrange them in their proper places. Lay the included screws at their joints to ensure that you have all of the necessary pieces.

    • 2

Pick up the central brace and screw the upper and lower cross bars into place. These bars should be parallel with one another, and perpendicular to the floor.

    • 3

Attach both legs to the ends of the upper cross bar, then screw them into the lower cross bar. Attach the upper canvas support by sliding it over the top of the easel and turning the knobs clockwise.

    • 4

Screw the brush tray to the bottom of the canvas support bar, if included. Determine if there is a channel to hold the canvas support, or if there are pre-drilled screwholes to attach it. Slide it into the holder on the central brace, or attach it using screws.
