How to Assemble a Lyre Easel

Lyre easels are typically mid-price easels and are used by professionals and hobbyists alike. The open A-frame design of the lyre easel is sturdier than closed A-frame designs, yet less expensive than most H-frame easels. As of 2011, lyre easels are priced at $100 and up at most hobby and art supply shops. More expensive easels are made of heavier, stronger woods and may include options such as adjustable upper and lower canvas supports, brush trays and attached palette trays. The serviceable lyre easel is a good choice for most, though, and its ease of assembly is another point in its favor.

Instructions

    • 1

Check to ensure you have all parts necessary for the assembly. You should have a central support bar, two cross bars, two legs and a canvas support. Some easels also include an upper support. Match the screws to the pre-drilled screw holes in each piece.

    • 2

Locate the central brace. This is usually the widest piece, and often has rounded corners. Line up the screw holes, and attach the shorter cross bar to the upper section of the brace.

    • 3

Screw the longer cross bar to the bottom of the central brace.

    • 4

Line the right leg with the holes in the upper and lower cross bars, and attach using screws. Repeat for the left side.

    • 5

Slide the lower canvas support over the top of the easel and push it down and tighten it into place by turning the knob or knobs clockwise. Repeat with the top canvas support, if included.
