How to Lacquer a Flat Canvas

Lacquer is used to add gloss or shine to surface. In addition to gloss, the lacquer adds a finish that protects the material from debris and damage. Lacquer is commonly applied to the surface of wood furniture and automobiles, but it can be applied to other surface types as well including canvas cloth. Lacquer will adhere to most paint and finish types except polyurethane or varnish. Before applying the lacquer, make sure your artwork is complete. You will not be able to add detail over the lacquer after it is applied, unless you sand it down.
