Why did Julian opie create his portraits?

To explore the relationship between people and technology. Opie's portraits are often of faceless people, which he says is meant to represent the way people are increasingly seen as data points rather than individuals in the digital age.

To challenge traditional notions of portraiture. Opie's portraits are not traditional in the sense that they do not attempt to capture a realistic likeness of the subject. Instead, they use technology to create abstract, simplified images that focus on the essential features of the person being portrayed.

To create a sense of mystery and intrigue. Opie's portraits are often ambiguous, leaving the viewer to wonder who the person is, what they are thinking, and what their story is. This sense of mystery is what makes Opie's portraits so compelling and thought-provoking.
