Animated Disney Horse Movies

Disney characters have taken on many shapes and forms, with animals taking starring roles in many of the film and TV productions. Most of those roles go to mice and ducks, so horses have typically filled supporting parts. Even with limited screen time, a handful of animated horses did manage to do something memorable.
  1. The Steeple Chase

    • This 1933 short featured Mickey Mouse and a horse named Thunderbolt. The storyline revolves around Mickey's plans to ride the horse in a race. Thunderbolt finds some alcohol and becomes too tipsy to run. This results in Mickey riding a pantomime horse. He even manages to win thanks to some bee stings.

    How to Ride a Horse

    • This short originally formed part of the 1941 movie "The Reluctant Dragon," which featured a tour of the Walt Disney Studio. Goofy starred with Percy the Horse in one of the first of the "How To" Disney films. Goofy usually displayed some lack of skill in these films. In "How to Ride a Horse" he demonstrated some inept riding abilities, much to the amusement of Percy.

    A Cowboy Needs a Horse

    • The short "A Cowboy Needs a Horse" came out in 1956. It was based on a young boy who dreamed about a life as a cowboy. His dreams take him and his horse on a series of adventures, including fighting Indians, foiling a stagecoach robbery, smoking a peace-pipe, and saving a girl. The cartoon ends with the two stars riding into the sunset.

    Horace Horsecollar

    • Horace Horsecollar played a role in several early Disney films alongside stars such as Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy. He was seen in the cartoons "Plowboy," "Pioneer Days," and "Barnyard Broadcast." In all, he appeared in 31 projects, which makes him the horse character most often portrayed in Disney animated features.

    Other Horse Characters

    • Maximus played a key role in the 2010 movie "Tangled," a retelling of the Rapunzel story. Buck the horse, voiced by Cuba Gooding Jr., played a prominent role in "Home on the Range," a tale of cattle rustlers released in 2004. Disney's stable of animated horses also includes Khan from "Mulan," Bullseye from the "Toy Story" movies, and Samson from "Sleeping Beauty."
